Simultaneously denoting pummeling mindblows that a band from industrial England can give you while also describing rock n’ roll best enjoyed on “downers,” i.e. your choice of barbiturates, ‘Ludes, benzos, etc., Downer Rock is instantly recognizable from the air raid sirens of “War Pigs” to the atomic fireballs of Blues Creation’s “Atomic Bombs Away.” Crawling out of the post-Flower Power wasteland, Downer Rock was forged in cynical response to the hopes of a generation slowly fading into nihilism. Mutually Assured Destruction never sounded so groovy. Downer Rock is a double entendre, if you consider drugs and heavy rock indecent to squares (which you should). No one is quite sure of the origin, but early examples point to Lester Bangs writing about Black Sabbath shows in 1971, or Sabs’ own skinslayer Bill Ward discussing the group’s own apocalyptic vibe. In any case, the term never caught on like “Punk Rock” or “Heavy Metal;” two loaded descriptors that carry on to this day. So, in tribute to this forgotten genre signifier of yore…
